Gabrielle Castrejón (Gabican), Cultural Threads Creator 2025

“Singing Willow”
This is my first public art piece. My other creative endeavors include a degree and career in Culinary Arts, and creating and leading eco-tours and classes as the owner of an organic herb farm.
The name Singing Willow was given to me after a workshop on The Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams, a Native American retreat leader of the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge. I made my garment to be a Tree. It brought up my personal experience of being rooted in the Earth and accessing the wisdom of The Knowledge Keepers.
The garment is flowing to represent a tree whose branches are flexible and fluid in the wind. My basket is made from my branches and holds all the rainbow tears that have been cried in Joy and Pain. Blue Hummingbird is my friend who has traveled on the winds to meet me and hear my song. The Green Circle in the basket and the design on the basket represent the Sacred Circle which is within us and all around us. I’ve discovered that looking back on my life journey, so far, I've had the strength and stability to weather the storms of life and enjoy the Beauty of Time in the Here and Now.
Wisdom from a Tree
The deeper the Foundation the greater the Expansion.
If you’re feeling heavy or stuck,
Like you're pushing against resistance,
REMEMBER: You’re not stuck,
You’re growing your roots.
The deeper you go, the higher you’ll RISE!
