“Chair X Heidelberg Project”

Chair is a mixed media artist who focuses on utilizing found materials, namely wood, to create engaging three dimensional pieces. Roused by the entropy of the 21st century, he engages themes both current and endemic to the American experience. “Chair X Heidelberg Project” was inspired by artist Tyree Guyton and the evolution of artist Chair.

The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art project located on Detroit’s eastside. Its mission is “to challenge the status quo, create a community for art, and cultivate a unique space for all who seek inspiration outside of museum walls.” Chair created this piece as a nod to Guyton and the work that inspired his own.

The boots represent the hard work and grit of Detroit. The right boot reflects art that can be seen throughout the Heidelberg Project. The polka dots, numbers, and clocks are just a few of the staples from Guyton. The left boot is symbolic of art from Chair. The checkerboard, oversized teeth, and the trademark bunny are frequently depicted in his work.
