Pauline Jasmin, Cultural Threads Creator 2024

My name is Pauline, and I am a local artist. My favorite medium has to be fabric. I get to spend so much time growing my patterns and creativity at The Styles Shop.
Growing up, my Grandma and Ma kept play, fashion and traditions close to my heart--from playing dress up with scraps of fabrics my Grandma had left over to making pasta and perogies with her.
I was inspired to dive deep into my Slovakian roots from my Mom and my Mexican roots from my Dad to create a mix of both heritages in a skirt. Deep down, I have always loved skirts that twirl super big. I was able to find some traditional looking flower patterns and color themes (red, yellow, black and white) to represent the Slavik traditions, while the cut of the skirt comes from Mexico and is a circle twirler skirt. Everything but the lace is a cotton base to keep it as natural and grounding as I could.
Creating this piece sparked inspiration to dig even deeper into my heritage and to continue to love dancing in beautiful flowy pieces. After wearing it once, I know I will wear it many times to have my heritage adorn my fashion. I loved getting to blend cultures together. Thank you, Cultural Threads crew.
A heartfelt thank you to our funders and sponsors for helping us to realize these projects in full.
