I chose to take part in this workshop because my love for creating is informed by my multicultural heritage.

By applying my skills of working with multiple mediums, I am able to create within the theme with fluidity. This workshop has inspired a creative fusion of my French and Korean heritage. The results have taken me by surprise and I have a vested interest in continuing the series.

This garment reflects my style by combining French, Korean, and traditional American styles and materials to create a unique and fresh perspective. I used French techniques taken from designers who elongate certain aspects of clothing to create a new focal point. The Korean ideals I worked with, inspired by their time under Japanese subjugation, use a traditional Korean-style shirt that was repurposed in this project. Following the theme of cultural fusion, I decided to use repurposed jean material, a typically American feature with a long history in this country.

I define culture as the use of knowledge and education of hereditary principles applied with a local sentiment. Combining these ideas in daily life creates a feeling of being present within oneself and one’s past. History shows us that culture reflects people’s natural resilience and informs how we view our identities going into an uncertain future. By reflecting these ideals in my product from this workshop, I have honored myself, my past family, and my future endeavors.

A heartfelt thank you to our funders and sponsors for helping us to realize these projects in full.
