I was inspired to create this garment for the opportunity to share what my culture means to me. The simple black dress represents me as a Black American woman. This is what society sees first and foremost. Before they see the wife, mother, educator or person that I am, they see my color.

The colorful trim speaks to me, reclaiming just a little of my lost African roots. This is important, because while Black Americans had to structure their own culture, we own the right to celebrate where we came from. The candle appliqué represents the light we still have within us. I’m old enough to remember the deaths of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Bobby Kennedy. I also remember the riots of the ‘60s and countless other atrocities. However, we made it through then, and we will continue, because we have that light.

I felt encouraged to share my thoughts through this project, as well as learning about others. I believe each time there is an opportunity to learn and share with others, it enriches our understanding and promotes respect.

A heartfelt thank you to our funders and sponsors for helping us to realize these projects in full.
