Prayer of water : “Give me the strength to feel it all”
I selected this garment for its protective material quality, its pure white color, and its style. I chose to paint it to honor the story that is being told through my own artistic development. I wanted to make something that felt authentic to my sense about where my art comes from.
I feel holy and fierce. Triumphant and more than a little rebellious. Difficult to contain. Yet adaptive to the circumstances that I fi nd along my path. In my life, I am an open channel for oceanic feeling. I am a river seeking the sea.
I think of my paintings as vivid dreams. They often come from and are informed by dreams and subconscious symbols having to do with themes in the lives around me. I treat them as an inquiry and I allow them to be a discovery rather than an outcome to arrest.
My relationship with water has always been a healing one. There’s a scripture that talks about the outpouring that is given to us and through us as women. I think of giving birth to my son. My tears. The creative energy that is carving a larger and larger channel through me. My sensitivity and willingness to engage it…is increasing. Water speaks to intuition and the spiritual wellspring that we all have access to. My reverence for it is strengthening.
